How to Tell If Sterling Silver Is Real: A Buyer's Guide to 925 Marks

Buying vintage silver is part of the fun of collecting, but how can you tell a piece is genuine sterling? Here are the most common checks, from quickest to most reliable.

What "sterling silver" means

Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. That's where the "925" stamp comes from. Pure silver is too soft for most jewelry, so the small amount of alloy makes it durable enough to wear.

1. Look for the hallmark

Most sterling jewelry is stamped somewhere discreet: inside a ring band, on a clasp, or on the back of a pendant or brooch. Common marks include 925, .925, Sterling, Ster. and STER. Vintage Mexican silver is often marked "Mexico" or "Taxco" along with 925, and older pieces may carry maker or assay marks. A magnifier or jeweler's loupe helps. Keep in mind that a stamp is strong evidence but not proof. Stamps can be faked, and some genuine older pieces were never marked.

2. The magnet test

Silver is not magnetic. If a strong magnet sticks firmly to the piece itself (not a clasp spring), it is probably not sterling. If it doesn't stick, that's a good sign but not conclusive, because some non-silver metals aren't magnetic either.

3. Tarnish and the cloth test

Real silver tarnishes over time and leaves a dark gray mark when rubbed with a soft white cloth. Plated pieces may show a different base metal where the plating has worn through, often at edges and high points.

4. Weight and feel

Sterling feels solid and has some heft for its size. When the weight is listed in grams, as it is on every piece in our shop, you can compare similar items side by side.

5. Professional testing

For valuable pieces, a jeweler can perform an acid test or an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) scan, which measures metal content without damaging the piece.

Sterling vs. silver-plated vs. "German silver"

Silver-plated jewelry has a thin layer of silver over another metal. "Nickel silver" or "German silver" contains no silver at all, despite the name.
